Check Out Inside The Lagos Slum Where Land Is Allocated At N2k & Residents Live In Dirt

Life at Mosquito village, a slum in Lagos state, is disgusting, brutal, weird, ephemeral, yet entertaining. The residents live in the cozy embrace of the filth surrounding them like the walls of Jericho — but life must go on. Their reality is gloomy but with daily doses of jest, they wade through the murky waters of their world. TAIWO ADEBULU, who visited the small community, reports. That foggy evening, the cloud of filthy smoke enveloped the alley of the sprawling shanties on the swampy piece of land stretching along the shores of a tributary of the Lagos lagoon. As an unknown figure sauntered into their community, the women frying assorted snacks stared frigidly, with curiosity plastered on their faces. With one hand, a restless young woman scooped the buns from the simmering vegetable...

African Immigrants In USA Are More Educated That Immigrants In UK And Europe

The growing number of African immigrants who settle in the United States are more highly educated than those who go to Europe, according to a new survey by a major American research group. The survey also confirms previous studies showing that African immigrants are more likely than Americans to have had some tertiary education. And in another finding, the survey shows that most African migrants settle in other African countries, and not in the U.S. or Europe. These are some of the highlights of a study carried out by the non-partisan Pew Research Center and published in Washington on Tuesday. Key excerpts from the study: As the annual number of migrants from sub-Saharan Africa to both the United States and Europe has grown for most years this decade, a Pew Research Center a...

Nigeria is not indebted to the United Nations as the country has paid $5,080,178 dollars up till April 5, 2018. The country is the 74th out of the 193 Member States of the global international organisation to fulfill its financial obligations. Spokesperson to the UN Secretary-General Stephane Dujarric said in New York that Nigeria paid its annual dues in full. Dujarric said: “Nigeria has paid its regular budget dues in full, bringing the Honour Roll to 74”. The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that one hundred and nineteen members were yet to pay their regular budgets. Records show that Nigeria became the 10th country in Africa to pay its UN regular budgets in full. Gambari Charges Government To Spend Less On Security Management

Former Permanent Representative of Nigeria to the United Nations (UN), Ambassador Ibrahim Gambari, yesterday, advocated better concentration on prevention of crisis and security threat rather than management. Gambari, also a former UN Under Secretary General and one-time Nigeria’s minister of Foreign Affairs, who spoke at the 34th convocation lecture of Bayero University, Kano (BUK), insisted that effective government policies on crisis prevention cost less than deploying huge public funds in the management. Citing the recent federal government’s approval of $1billion for procurement of security hardware, Gambari pointed that the security challenge would have been better managed if the root cause of the crisis were nipped in the bud. He recalled: “Take, for instance, what the UN i...

53-Yrs-Old Journalist, Abdullahi Shuaibu Who Worked For UN Sentenced To Prison For Robbery In US

A former United Nations staff has been convicted by a court in the United States of America for fraud. A Court in Manhattan on Thursday sentenced Abdullahi Shuaibu, 53, who worked at the UN in 2013,  to two years in prison after an exhaustive plea agreement with the court. It was a stunning defeat for the prosecutor who had asked that Shuaibu be sentenced to five years under the indictment. Shuaibu pleaded guilty to one count of Attempted Robbery in the Second Degree; one count of Robbery in the Third Degree, a non-violent offense; and two counts of Grand Larceny, also non-violence offense. Grand larceny, also known as a grand theft, is the intentional taking of someone’s property or business under illegal conditions. Shuaibu received two years for the one count of Attempted Robbery ...

Chinese Condoms Too Small For Zimbabwean Men — Health Minister

Health minister David Parirenyatwa has challenged local companies to consider manufacturing condoms, saying imported options aren’t quite up to task. According to New Zimbabwe, the minister was speaking at the recent launch of a new board for the Zimbabwe Private Sector HIV and Aids Wellness Coordinating Programme (ZPSHAWP) in Harare. Condoms are a type of contraception that can both prevent pregnancy and protect against sexually transmitted infections (STIs). Parirenyatwa said most of the condoms available in the country are imported from China, adding that some local men however found them not quite the right size. “You know this region, the Southern African region, has the highest incidence of HIV and we are promoting the use of condoms; both males and females,” said the min...
