Chelsea cruise past Dynamo Kiev, towards Europa League quarters

Chelsea dominated Dynamo Kiev to take control of their Europa League last-16 tie as goals from Pedro Rodriguez, Willian and Callum Hudson-Odoi earned the hosts a 3-0 win at Stamford Bridge on Thursday. The Londoners may well need to win the competition to ensure a return to the Champions League next season as they sit sixth in the Premier League, and justified their tag as tournament favourites against the Ukrainians. Pedro turned home an intricate backheel from Olivier Giroud to open the scoring on 17 minutes and only some wayward finishing and fine goalkeeping from Denys Boyko kept Kiev in the game before the break. However, Willian’s sweet free-kick and substitute Hudson-Odoi’s late third gave the scoreline a fairer reflection of the 90 minutes. A third straight victory main...

2019 Africa Cup of Nations Hosts to be Named Today

The Confederation of African Football (Caf) will announce which country will host the 2019 Africa Cup of Nations on Tuesday – a day earlier than expected. No reason has been given for Caf’s sudden change of timing, with the announcement having been scheduled for Wednesday 9 January. Egypt and South Africa have submitted formal bids to host the finals. Original host nation Cameroon was stripped of staging the tournament in November because of slow preparations. CAF has since offered Cameroon the chance to stage the finals in two years’ time, which has meant that the original hosts for both the 2021 and 2023 finals have been asked to delay their tournaments. Ivory Coast, which was set to host the 2021, has protested the decision at the Court of Arbitration for Sport. Guin...

Serena Lauds WTA over Pregnancy Rule Change

Serena roars on the way to qualifying for Friday’s semi finals on Tuesday night Serena Williams has lauded new changes to the ‘Special Ranking’ rule which have been introduced by the WTA for 2019. The 37-year-old American – who gave birth to her daughter Alexis Olympia in September 2017 and returned to the circuit in March 2018 – believes the changes will encourage more players to take a break from the Tour to have children then come back to resume their careers. Under the new rules, returning mothers who have a special ranking that would earn them a seeded position can be drawn as an ‘additional seed’ at tournaments, meaning they would not be able to face a seed in the opening round of a tournament. The change also ensures that no seed will get bumped as a result of a retu...
