Kwara Lecturer, Opashola Abdullahi Pleads Guilty to Romance Scam

Opashola Abdullahi, a lecturer of the Kwara State College of Health Technology, Offa, has pleaded guilty to a charge of romance scam. The Ilorin Zonal Office of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, on Monday, February 8, 2021, arraigned him before Justice Adenike Akinpelu of the Kwara State High Court, Ilorin. Opashola was among the 32 internet fraud suspects arrested in Offa on September 14, 2020. His offence contravenes Section 95 of the Penal Code and punishable under Section 324 of the same Law. A 48-year-old Nigerian identified as Joseph Olajide Akeredolu has been arrested in India for duping a diamond broker from south Mumbai of Rs 1.16 crore or $217,000. The police said Akeredolu is part of a gang that creates fake accounts on social media, approaches people through these accounts and then dupes them under the pretext of sending gifts. A Nigerian, Felix Osilama Okpoh, who is wanted by the U.S. Federal Bureau of Investigations (FBI) for his alleged involvement in a Business Email Compromise (BEC) scheme that defrauded over 70 different businesses in the United States, has turned himself in to Nigeria’s anti-graft agency, the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC). A Nigerian woman identified as Jumoke Monsurat Ayedun has been arrested in New Jersey, United States after she scammed an elderly woman of $17,000. Using the old 419 trick, Ayedun had told the woman, who later became her victim, that the victim was eligible for a grant of $75,000 from the United Nations Democracy Fund Program. The Smith County Sheriff’s Office said the victim, based in Smith County, Texas sent Ayedun $17,000 in total, to access the $75,000 from a fake UN Fund. The National Agency for Prohibition of Trafficking In Persons (NAPTIP) has advised Nigerians to shun investing in visa lotteries, warning that such schemes are scams. NAPTIP’s Director (Intelligence) Public Enlightenment, Orakwue Arinze, made the call while briefing journalists at a one-day international conference on illegal migration and trafficking in persons conference, organised by the Nigerian Young Professional Forum, on Tuesday in Abuja. He, however, decried inadequate funding of the educational sector in the country, attributing it to why Nigerians patronise visa lotteries and indulge in illegal migration.
