Some prominent Lagosians, including Chief Alaba Williams, Bashorun Jaiye Randle, Ade Dosunmu and Chief Adesunbo Onitiri, have urged immediate scrapping of Lekki Tollgate to “alleviate the economic burden of residents and ease free-flow of traffic in the area.” In a 12-point communiqué issued after their maiden meeting, they charged the Federal Government on bringing to justice military killers of the peaceful #EndSARS protesters at the plaza on October 20, 2020. The concerned citizens also urged prosecution of arsonists and hoodlums behind destruction of public and private property in the state as deterrent to others. The counsel representing #EndSARS protesters before the Lagos State Panel of Judicial Inquiry probing the alleged shooting of the protesters by soldiers at the Lekki tollgate, Mr Adesina Ogunlana, has said his team has evidence to counter the claim by the Nigerian Army that there was no massacre or killings of protesters at the tollgate on the night of October 20. In response to a summons by the judicial panel, the Nigerian Army had on Friday filed its defence papers and listed three Brigadier Generals and one Lieutenant Colonel to testify before the panel. The army submitted to the panel statements on oath deposed to by the top military officers, who insisted that only blank ammunition were filed to disperse the protesters. The Nigerian Army said it was bringing before the pa...

#EndSARS Protesters Not Recognised By Law – LASG’s Counsel Tells Judicial Panel

Counsel to the Lagos State government, Mr Abiodun Owonikoko (SAN), on Friday, told the Lagos Judicial Panel of Inquiry into the Lekki Tollgate shootings that #EndSARS protesters were a body not recognised by law. Owonikoko made the submission after Mr Adesina Ogunlana announced his appearance to the panel as the counsel representing the EndSARS protesters. Ogunlana had informed the panel that he would be cross-examining Mr Abayomi Omomuwasan, the Managing Director of Lekki Concession Company (LCC). Omomuwasan was appearing before the panel to testify on the Oct. 20 shooting of #EndSARS protesters by members of the Nigerian military at the Lekki tollgate. “To the best of my knowledge, there is no body called #EndSARS protesters and we know that a lawyer must adjudicate based on in...

Lekki Shootings: Army Makes U-turn, Set To Appear Before Lagos Panel On 7 November 2020

The Nigerian Army, contrary to its decision last week,  will appear  on Saturday before the Lagos State Panel of Inquiry probing the alleged shooting of #EndSARS peaceful protesters by soldiers on  October 20 at the Lekki tollgate. Sources close to the retired Justice Doris Okuwobi-led panel confirmed to The PUNCH on Thursday that the army had acknowledged the panel’s invitation and the panel had fixed Saturday (November 7) for its appearance at the hearing taking place at the Lagos Court of Arbitration, Lekki. Recall that for two weeks last month, youths calling for the disbanding of the Special Anti-Robbery Squad of  the Nigeria Police protested across the country. In Lagos, the protests assumed a tragic dimension when soldiers shot protesters at the Lekki tollgate. The s...

Hoodlums Wearing Army Uniform Behind Lekki Shooting – Malami

Abubakar Malami, attorney-general of the federation (AGF), says it is likely that hoodlums wearing military fatigues — and not soldiers — shot #EndSARS protesters at the Lekki tollgate in Lagos state. About two weeks ago, protests calling for the disbandment of the special anti-robbery squad (SARS) took flight across the country. The police unit was disbanded but the protests persisted as citizens demanded reforms in the force. Protesters converged on the tollgate for 13 days before they were forcefully dispersed by soldiers. There are reports that some of the protesters were killed by the soldiers who stormed the tollgate on October 20, 2020, but there are disparities in the number of casualties and no clear evidence has been produced. Speaking with journalists on Monda...

Panel rejects LCC’s request to ‘take back’ Lekki tollgate

The Judicial Panel of Inquiry probing the alleged shootings of #EndSARS protesters by soldiers on October 20, 2020 at the Lekki tollgate in Lagos has declined the request by the operators of the tollgate, Lekki Concession Company, to “take back possession” of the tollgate. The Chairman of the panel, retired Justice Doris Okuwobi, in a short ruling on Tuesday, said the tollgate plaza would remain closed. The judge said the panel might have a need to pay another visit to the tollgate plaza after watching the video footage from a surveillance camera submitted by the LCC on Tuesday. Counsel for LCC, Rotimi Seriki, had urged the panel to allow the firm “take possession” of the tollgate plaza to evaluate the level of damage for the purpose insurance claims. Seriki was reinforcing...
