Iran Denies US Accusation Of Destabilising Region

Iran’s foreign ministry denied on Wednesday US accusations that the Islamic Republic is playing a destabilising role in the region, state media reported. US Secretary of State Rex Tillerson had said on Tuesday that Iran is carrying out “destabilising actions” by supporting Hezbollah in Lebanon, supplying missiles to Houthi forces in Yemen and sending weapons and militia fighters to Syria. “Repeating the groundless accusations and lies will not help solve the large and strategic mistakes America has made in recent decades against Iran and the region,” foreign ministry spokesman Bahram Qassemi was quoted as saying by state media. “While there’s time remaining, Mr. Tillerson should become more familiar with the realities and history of the region and American policies, and its effect...

Governor El-Rufai Plans To Replace Sacked Teachers With Loyalists – Shehu Sani

The senator, representing Kaduna Central, Shehu Sani, has criticised Governor Nasir El-Rufai over the planned sack of over 21, 000 primaryschool teachers. Mr. Sani, a critic of the governor, described the move as a ‘height of lunacy.’ Governor El-Rufai had in October announced, at a meeting with World Bank representatives, his intention of disengaging 21,780 teachers, about two-thirds of the total teachers’ population. “The hiring of teachers in the past was politicised and we intend to change that by bringing in young and qualified primary school teachers to restore the dignity of education in the state,” the governor said concerning the teachers who reportedly failed to score 75 per cent in a primary four examination the state set for them to test their academic abilities. Kenya Waits For An End To Presidential Re-Run

Kenya’s election board is expected Monday to decide whether to reschedule a vote in flashpoint opposition areas, where a boycott sparked violent protests, or to push ahead with declaring victory for President Uhuru Kenyatta. With the counting almost done after Thursday’s presidential re-run, the results remained on hold as officials mulled what to do about the 25 constituencies in four western counties where voting was blocked. Supporters of opposition leader Raila Odinga, who called for an election boycott, managed to prevent hundreds of polling stations from opening, prompting violent clashes with police which continued for several days, leaving nine dead and scores injured. At least 49 people have died since the first presidential election of August 8, which was later overturne...

The minister, in an article with the title Positioning Nigeria for a prosperous future, said “The administration of President Muhammadu Buhari is laying the foundation for the kind of economic growth that makes a real impact in the lives of citizens.” Writing against the country’s recent exit from recession, Adeosun said, “Since the middle of 2014, when the price of crude oil fell dramatically, Nigeria’s finances became challenged. This is not hard to explain: we’ve historically depended on crude oil for as much as 70 per cent of government revenues, and 90 per cent of foreign exchange earnings. The outc...

For Fela, as he is still known to fans, music was often a life-threatening fight against corrupt military dictatorships that ruled Nigeria in the 1970s and 1980s. For the talented Krizbeatz, a child of the capitalist and democratic 1990s, music is a game. But the self-assured 22-year-old music producer — real name Chris Alvin Sunday — still takes his inspiration from Fela when he’s at his mixing desk. “I studied House Music in South Africa but I’m a Nigerian. Afrobeat is what I grew up listening to. Afrobeat is who I am,” he told AFP. In 2016, Krizbeatz produced the hit “Pana”, which has had close to 53 ...

Beyonce Charity Song Finally Dethrones Despacito

Beyonce’s Spanish-language remix of “Mi Gente” for hurricane relief opened Wednesday on top of the US Latin song chart, finally dethroning the global mega-hit “Despacito.” “Mi Gente,” which Colombian reggaeton star J Balvin created from the African dance rhythms of French DJ Willy William, had lingered for 11 weeks at number two on the Billboard Latin song chart underneath the colossus of “Despacito.” “Mi Gente” finally reached the top spot for the week through October 5 in the track’s new version starring Beyonce, who sings partially in Spanish in her first music since giving birth to twins in June. Beyonce said that all proceeds of the remix of “Mi Gente,” which means “My People,” would support victims of the trio of powerful hurricanes that have ravaged the Caribbean and the so...

The order was pursuant to a suit filed by Obiechina, praying the court to order his release from police detention. His lawyer, Olukoya Ogungbeje, said Obiechina had been detained by the police since June 2 in connection with the kidnapping case of his brother-in-law, Evans. EFCC Arraigns Oil Marketers, Others For N7 Billion Fraud

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) Monday arraigned two directors of two oil service companies, Ogbor Kehinde Eliot, Godwin Okoronkwo before the Federal High Court in Lagos over a N7 billion fraud. The duo were docked alongside the oil firms, Danium Energy Services Ltd and Petrosol Energy Ltd by the EFCC on a ten counts charge of defrauding a new generation bank of the sum of N7,802,649,000 under false pretence. The commission accused the defendants of presenting forged documents to the bank after claiming to have been awarded multi-billion naira contracts by Total Nigeria Plc. The anti-graft agency also alleged that the defendants claimed they got contracts to supply thousands of metric tonnes of diesel and needed funding. EFCC, in the charge signed by prosecu...

Senator Bukola Saraki Decries Rise In Suicide Rate, Substance Abuse

Senate President Bukola Saraki has called for the main-streaming of mental health services as part of the country’s push for Universal Health Coverage for its citizens. Universal health coverage is defined as ensuring that all people have access to needed promotive, preventive, curative and rehabilitative health services, that are of sufficient quality to be effective. Speaking at the 3rd annual Novo Health Africa World Mental Health Day Symposium, held in Abuja on Monday, Saraki, a doctor, expressed worry on the ease, at which young people purchase over-the counter-drugs, which they readily abuse, risking their mental wellbeing. Kenya police killed 35 in August poll violence – rights group

Thirty-seven people were killed after Kenya’s August elections, and all but two of the cases were caused by “excessive” force by police, a human rights watchdog said on Monday. Previous tolls from the disputed elections – since annulled by the Supreme Court – had not exceeded 24, and until now there were few details into how the deaths occurred. In a 262-page report, the Kenya National Commission on Human Rights (KNCHR) said 35 of 37 deaths it documented between August 9-15, were due to “excessive use of force by police”. The remaining two were due to “civilian aggression”. The August 8 presidential poll has been cancelled by Kenya’s paramount court, which cited widespread “illegalities and irregularities.” New elections are scheduled for October 26. The report, titled “Mira...

Corruption, Disunity Hinder Nigeria’s Progress – Cleric

Mr Joshua Chukwudi, a senior minister of God’s Kingdom Society, has called on Nigerians to avoid acts of corruption in order not to hinder the progress of the country. Chukwudi made the call in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria in Kuchiaku, near Karu, Nasarawa State, on Monday. He said corruption and evil acts had been delaying the development of Nigeria and that if these were not stopped, it would be difficult for the country to progress. Chukwudi urged the citizens to be law-abiding to fast-track national development. “As Christians we are supposed to be the best in terms of character in the society. “Similarly the Bible enjoins us to fear God and live peacefully with our neighbours,’’ he said. He said that members of GSK believed that Jesus Christ, the Redee...

UN Peacekeeper Killed In Attack On DRC Military Base – Monusco

Rebels from a Ugandan-dominated group on Monday attacked a UN military base in eastern Democratic Republic of Congo, killing one peacekeeper and injuring 12 others, the UN mission said. The attack took place in Beni, where UN soldiers have been battling the Allied Democratic Forces (ADF), which is dominated by hard line Ugandan Muslims, a spokesperson for the UN mission in the DRC said. Congolese troops had clashed with the rebels in the area on Sunday. The day before, the ADF attacked around 10 motorbike taxis in the locality. “The Mamundioma base was attacked at 05:30 (03:30 GMT),” the UN mission known by its French acronym Monusco said, adding that UN ground and air forces had been deployed in the area. The UN did not specify the nationality of the dead soldier or the injure...

Iran Confirms Nuclear Negotiator Imprisoned For Spying

Iran’s judiciary confirmed on Sunday the five-year prison sentence given to a Canadian-Iranian member of its nuclear negotiating team on spying charges. “Mr Abdolrasoul Dorri Esfahani… was among some who were accused of spying and providing information for foreigners and had links with two espionage services,” judiciary spokesman Gholamhossein Mohseni Ejeie told reporters. Some reports have also said Dorri Esfahani has British citizenship. “The court sentenced him to five years in prison and the verdict is final,” Ejeie said. “He also has a financial corruption case for which a bail has been issued but no indictment has been issued yet.” Dorri Esfahani has a background in the banking sector and was a member of the supervisory board overseeing implementation of the nuclear de...

Ignorance, Ill-Equipped Hospitals Complicate Breast Cancer In Nigeria – Betty Akeredolu

The wife of Ondo State governor, Mrs Betty Akeredolu, on Sunday, identified ignorance, ill-equipped hospitals as contributing to death arising from the breast cancer disease in Nigeria. Mrs. Akeredolu who stated this during a press conference heralding the 20th anniversary of Breast Cancer Association of Nigeria (BRECAN) and 3rd International Breast Cancer symposium, urged breast cancer patients not to lay the cause of their predicament on the door steps of witches. The founder of BRECAN advised women with the disease to make hospital their first port of call rather than seeking spiritual help, saying breast cancer should not be seen as death sentence. She said “they prefer spiritual help and the hospital is always the last port of call, they only turn up in a clinic when the dis...

World Will Condemn US If It Quits Nuclear Deal – Iran’s Hassan Rouhani

Iranian President Hassan Rouhani has defended a landmark nuclear deal with Western powers and said that US President Donald Trump could not undermine it. Under the 2015 agreement, Tehran agreed to limit its disputed nuclear programme in return for the easing of economic sanctions. Trump has repeatedly criticised the accord, which was negotiated by the Obama administration and enshrined under United Nations Security Council Resolution 2231, as “the worst deal ever” and “an “embarrassment”. He has to review it by October 15 and decide if Iran is keeping to its end of the bargain, and whether it serves US interests. On Thursday, he said Iran had not lived up to the spirit of the deal, and reports have suggested he may decertify it – a step that potentially could cause the agreemen...

Time Not Yet Right for Sudan Talks On Terror Blacklist – US Envoy

The top US envoy in Sudan said on Saturday that conditions have to be “right” for holding talks with Khartoum on removing it from Washington’s blacklist of state sponsors of “terrorism”. US charge d’affaires to Khartoum Steven Koutsis’ remarks came a day after Washington ended its 20-year-old trade embargo on the east African country. However, the US did not drop Sudan from the blacklist, a consistent demand by Khartoum in return for co-operating with US intelligence agencies in fighting “terrorism”. “This is something that both sides are keenly willing to discuss, but we have to be certain that conditions are right for discussions to remove [Sudan] from the list,” Koutsis said at a press conference at the US mission in Khartoum. “The government of Sudan knows fully well what i...
