Nigerian Customs Agency Takes In N11bn In 11 Months – Official

The Nigeria Customs Service (NCS) has seized 3,870 goods worth N11.2 billion Duty Paid Value (DPV) from January to November as against 5,602 goods worth N10.2 billion DPV seized same period in 2016. The Public Relations Officer of the Service, Mr Joseph Attah, told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Tuesday in Abuja that 2017 seizures were intelligence driven. Attah said that the cause of increase in 2017 DPV, compared to that of the less number of seizures in 2016, was that service seized more high profile cars and bullet proof vehicles. He said that in 2016, a number of reforms were taken by the Comptroller-General of Customs, retired Col. Hameed Ali, adding that the success recorded in 2017 was the fruit of those pain sticking steps. “Between January and November 2016, we recorded ...

Why There Are Many Illegal Firearms In Nigeria – Expert

A front-line security consultant and former British police officer, Vince Onyekwelu, has said the recent seizure of arms, especially pump-action rifles, by the Nigerian Customs Service, paints a worrisome picture. According to him, the situation could be attributed to the poor management of port authority and port systems in Nigeria. He maintained that the Nigerian Customs Service was not adequately equipped to scan and easily detect illegal weapons. He explained further that the choice of pump-action rifles was indicative of an interest in close combat, as they were for home defense. Onyekwelu said this when he spoke about the interception and seizure by Customs of 2,671 pump-action rifles smuggled into the country between January and September this year during an appearance o...

I Don’t Own Snakes, But Following Divine Mandate, I Spent N31m Treating Snake Bite Victims In Three Months —Gov Ortom

Governor Samuel Ortom of Benue State, on Tuesday, denied allegations making the rounds that he operates snake farm. Instead, he said, he had been saving the lives of those bitten by snakes. The governor further disclosed that rather than inflicting pains on people through his alleged snake farm, he had incurred N31m within three months treating victims of snake bites. He, however, said there was nothing wrong for anybody to go into any kind of farming, including snake farming, which the constitution permits. His denial is coming on the heels of a report alleging that the governor owns snakes farm at his Oracle Farm along Naka Road, Makurdi; and that the consignment intercepted last week by the Nigerian Customs in Calabar belonged to him. The governor, who briefed newsmen aft...

Customs Is Dishonest About N486bn Revenue – Omokri

Former Special Assistant to ex-President Goodluck Jonathan on New Media, Reno Omokri has described the Nigeria Customs Service as dishonest for declaring N486bn generated within the first half of 2017 as the highest collected. The NCS had earlier through its Public Relations Officer, Joseph Attah, said it had hit a record in revenue collection, making N486bn in six months as against N385 billion in 2016. However, in a series of tweets, Omokri faulted this claim. He said, “With the devalued Naira this is not up to how much they made during the Goodluck Jonathan administration. “The amount of ₦486bn at the official rate of ₦362 to $1 is $1.3 bn. In 2014, they made ₦425bn in the first 6 months. The amount of ₦425bn at the then official rate of ₦150 to $1 is $2.8bn. “So in actual f...
