Nigeria’s foremost ICT market — Computer Village, Ikeja — used to be under the leadership of the Computer and Allied Product Dealers Association of Nigeria (CAPDAN), headed by Ahmed Ojikutu.
However, with rumours of an impending installation of an Iyaloja and Balaloja (traditional market leaders) in the famous market, it appeared there was going to be a shake up in that managerial structure as we well know it.
Techpoint visited the Computer Village in Ikeja, Lagos last week Friday and discovered that the installation of both Iyaloja and Balaloja in the market had been completed the day before (which was Thursday).
Prior to the visit, Techpoint had come across reports of a protest against the move.
The major concern of the protesters was the lack of connection between technology, which the hub is known for, and the planned installation of traditional market leaders. But it turns out this story had a huge twist to it.
Meet the elegant “Iyaloja“
Techpoint would finally get audience with the newly appointed Iyaloja of Computer Village, Ikeja. The elegant figure, who immediately introduced herself as Abisola Azeez Raolat, doesn’t fit the stereotype of a traditional market leader.
Abisola is a degree holder, having studied Lingustics and graduated from the University of Benin in 1990. This explains her ability to communicate very proficiently. But her journey to become leader of the market is what is remarkable.
Abisola used to have an office in the highbrow area of Victoria Island, Lagos where she was in the business of buying laptops overseas and selling locally.
She relocated to Ikeja as far back as 25 years ago, five years before Computer Village, Ikeja was formally set up in 1999.
So it didn’t come as a surprise when she mentioned that she was a foundation member of CAPDAN and also doubled as its secretary till the reformist leadership era.
“I am the secretary of the group that registered CAPDAN,” Abisola explains, “I was the major person whom God used to install the president of the association. Evidence of this can be found in the video of his electioneering campaign as I was in the forefront of it,” Abiola continues.
Even though the committee has an executive board, Abisola boasts of being the major negotiator with blue chip companies and banks on behalf of CAPDAN.
“As part of the executive board of CAPDAN, and apart from being the secretary of the group that registered the association, I am the one who goes out on behalf of the association to talk to the likes of Microsoft and other blue chip companies. I’m the one they send. So I have been in the system for long doing all of these, adding value to the business and community at large,” she adds.
Because of this, she says she is fully aware of what the needs of the business community in Computer Village are.
Tackling the challenges
“The challenges of the people here are many, but I can tell you that lack of funding for these shop owners sits somewhere at the top. I however equally know how to harness facilities that enhance the growth of businesses in Computer Village,” says Abisola.
She narrates how in the early days, banks used to be a stumbling block to most shop owners in the market. Apparently, banks would stock laptops and make their customers pay in instalments.
“I was one of the people who wrote to the government to stop banks from selling laptops as they aren’t specifically in the business of buying and selling.”
Just as effective as that measure was, Abisola believes that with government influence, they can cut away a lot of anti-competitive practices that are harmful to most shop owners in the market.
But most importantly, she feels that brands that are willing to give loan facilities to shop owners can do so now that a position such as the Iyaloja (or Babaloja) could come in handy as their guarantor.
Other equally pressing tasks
Having spoken about the things she could do as the Iyaloja of Ikeja Computer Village, Abisola did not fail to express her concern about security in the market.
“I can tell you authoritatively that majority of the people on the streets (of Computer Village) are doing nothing. It is impossible not to get accosted by at least 5 boys asking if you want to buy or sell laptop should you find yourself walking the streets of Ikeja. Those are miscreants. The ones that really have things to sell are in front of their shops.
She says they are however planning to completely restore sanity to the streets of Computer Village, Ikeja.
“We cannot leave a large market like this just like that, without adequate security. If we remove those, you will see that there will be sanity on the streets with free flowing traffic. Very soon you would see that, on the streets of Ikeja, there will be no waiting, no stopping and no soliciting. Just keep moving,” boasts Abisola.
On the timing of her appointment, Abisola explains that there was nothing sudden about it. According to her, more than five meetings, spanning several months had been held with stakeholders.
“I have always been a leader. I’ve been called ‘Iyaloja’ by everyone in the market for over ten years, as a nickname and as a result of my contribution in the market. But in my humble opinion, I think it’s just the right time for God to crown the name with a position,” she concludes.
Leading side by side with Abisola is Adeniyi Olasoji, who is not only the newly appointed Babaloja but a shop owner in the Computer Village, Ikeja as well.
Former Manchester United manager Jose Mourinho hailed Lionel Messi as ‘the God of Football’ following Barcelona’s 3-0 victory over Liverpool.
Messi struck twice in the second-half of the
Champions League semi-final first leg at Camp Nou as Barca beat Liverpool by the same scoreline they defeated United in the quarter-final second leg.
Although Mourinho antagonised Barca as Internazionale and Real Madrid coach, he spent four years at the club working with the late Sir Bobby Robson and Louis van Gaal and his son, Jose Jr., is an avid Barcelona fan who is particularly reverential towards Messi.
Mourinho commended Liverpool for their bravery in Barcelona, where Sadio Mane lofted an excellent chance over the crossbar at 1-0 and Roberto Firmino had an effort cleared off the line before Mohamed Salah struck the post. Liverpool remarkably had more possession than Barca but could also have lost by a greater margin.
“Liverpool was brave in the approach,”
Mourinho told Russia Today. “I don’t think in the past 20 years many teams in the Champions League beat Barcelona in ball possession in the Champions League.
Manchester United make Juan Mata final contract offer
“God of Football made it completely different. Of course [Barca] have a good team, phenomenal players, but that player is absolutely incredible.
“Liverpool deserve much more than the 3-0 defeat but in the last two corners of the game it could be 4-0 or 5-0, because the game was broken and then they couldn’t cope. The question is which Barcelona will we have when Messi decides to say goodbye.
“Fabinho and even [Roberto] Firmino looks small [for the free-kick] but is not small. Firmino is the last one but this side, the goalkeeper gave one metre to the diagonal to cover that situation and it’s impossible to stop.
Why Romelu Lukaku is considering leaving Manchester United
“Luis Suarez’s movement [for the first goal] is phenomenal. One metre here, and I bring the defender with me, at least mentally because the defender thinks I’m going in that direction and now I’m going to attack the space in front. And goodbye.”
Mourinho also questioned Tottenham coach Mauricio Pochettino’s decision to play a back three in their 1-0 first leg loss to Ajax, who lined up with playmaker Dusan Tadic doubling as the centre forward.
“Tottenham was playing with three centre-backs against nobody,” Mourinho scoffed.
Manchester United might have already made two key signings

Apple has unveiled a pristine brilliant battery pack cases for its most recent iPhones. The new savvy cases will function as a power bank and charge the iPhone when required. This is the first battery pack Apple will release after the one the organization sold for the iPhone 6/iPhone 6s. Until further notice, the brilliant battery case will be accessible in just 2 colors which are black and white. Highly contrasting, for me, I prefer the white color, however. It looks truly dope!
The battery pack will expand the battery life of the iPhone however will make it somewhat thicker and heavier. This smooth and creative shrewd case for the iPhone will be accessible for three models. The iPhone XS, the iPhone XS Max and the iPhone XR which are the most recent phones released by the organization. Another extraordinary component of this case is that it has a wireless charging feature. This implies you can undoubtedly charge them by dropping them on the charging cushion as opposed to connecting them.
In any case, it is imperative to take note of that there are distinctive cases for various iPhone. The iPhone XS has an alternate case, the iPhone XR has its very own diverse case while the iPhone XS MAX has its own different case. Apple says the iPhone XS case presents to 21 hours of web use or 25 hours of video playback, the iPhone XS Max case presents to 20 hours of web utilization or 25 hours of video playback, and the iPhone XR case presents to 22 hours of web use or 27 hours of video playback.
The cases which are available in black and white colors are already on sale. Like I said earlier, the price is $129 only, quite expensive for a power bank. I know its only a matter of time before Chinese manufacturers will flood the market with similar smart battery cases for Android devices.
The price of this smartphone case is more than enough to buy you a 5,000 mAh Tecno Pouvoir phone that will last you 3 days on a single charge. Can you pay N46,440 for this smart case by Apple? Tell us in the comment section.

After all, is said and done, the Lagos State Government finally set a date to commission its 820 buses to the public.
As earlier predicted, we released some exclusive pictures of the BRT buses to you when they were in Ikeja BRT park.
Lagos State Governor, Mr. Akinwunmi Ambode on Wednesday said plans have been firmed up to roll out the Bus Reform Project of the State Government in March with 820 high and medium capacity buses, saying that the initiative would redefine public transportation and make the State to be globally competitive.
The Governor, who said this during an extensive inspection tour of ongoing projects across the State which lasted from morning till late in the night, said the initiative was basically designed to inject 5,000 buses, modern terminals, facilitate ease of mobility for residents and also rev up Lagos economy, among others.
While inspecting the assembling plant at Awoyaya in Ibeju Lekki area of the State which is also serving as the temporary holding bay for 500 out of the 820 buses, Governor Ambode expressed optimism that the buses would be rolled out after the elections, while the next phase of the project would be to assemble the buses in Lagos.
“This is an assembling plant. The dream is that beyond the procurement of 820 buses by the government, the next set of buses in the vision should be assembled in Lagos in this assembling plant and another one in Epe.
“That is the dream and the whole project is scalable and in this scale right now, we would run with the 820; you have seen the maintenance workshops and all that, and then the next scale which is the next phase is for Nigerians to be able to assemble the buses in Lagos and then we create employment opportunities and also allow the GDP of Lagos to grow. The buses are ready and we think with everything we have done, we should be able to roll out these buses may be immediately after the elections,” he said.
The Federal Executive Council on Wednesday in Abuja approved the establishment of four new private universities in Kaduna, Oyo, Ogun and Osun States.
The Minister of Education, Adamu Adamu, confirmed this when he briefed State House correspondents at the end of the first meeting of the council in 2019.
The meeting was presided over by President Muhammadu Buhari.
According to the minister, the new universities are Greenfield University Kaduna, Dominion University, Ibadan, Trinity University, Laloko in Ogun and Westland University in Iwo, Osun.
“All the four have satisfied the criteria for the establishment of universities.
“They have submitted their academic briefs, their master plans and evidence of facilities after visitation by the National Universities Commission; they have satisfied all those requirements and they are being granted licences,’’ he added.
The Minister of Power, Works and Housing, Babatunde Fashola, who also addressed the correspondents, said the Council approved a National Public Building Maintenance Policy and Framework.
He said the new policy, would institutionalise a maintenance culture in the country, saying that some of the benefits of the policy would provide an inventory of government assets, and job opportunities for Nigerians.
“We have trained artisans at different levels but we have not created an economy for them to go and express themselves – Tilers, Bricklayers, Plumbers, landscapers, fitters etc.
“When they leave training schools what do they do? They go and ride tricycles where there is no training school because there is an economy in tricycles – this is the answer.
“So, we have started with a pilot (scheme) to demonstrate to Council that this will work.
“Some of the things that this will bring include an inventory of all assets that government owns.
“It gives us an assessment of the conditions and value, then, it gives us a maintenance framework about what needs to be done after assessments and then a maintenance procurement manual.

President Muhammadu Buhari has appointed former Senate Minority leader, Senator Godswill Akpabio as the National Coordinator of the Presidential Support Committee
NAN reports that the Akwa Ibom state Coordinator of the committee, Pastor Mfon Okon, who disclosed this on Thursday, in Uyo, said four indigenes of the state have also been appointed into the committee.
They include Lady Valerie Ebe, a former deputy governor of the state as chairman, National Advisory Committee, Senator John Akpanudoedehe, National Director – Planning & Strategy, Senator Aloysius Etok – National Director for inter-party affairs, and the party’s South-South zonal woman leader, Mrs Rachael Akpabio as the National Assistant Welfare Secretary.
According to Okon, the appointments were a reflection of the confidence President Buhari reposed on their ability to successfully work for his re-election in the forthcoming presidential election.
He called on the people of the state to fully key into national politics by supporting the All Progressives Congress to return the President, and ensure that the party wins Akwa Ibom State in 2019.
Meanwhile, preparations are underway by the APC in the state to ensure a hitch-free South-South zonal flag-off of President Buhari re-election campaign slated for the Godswill Akpabio international stadium, Uyo on December 28th.

The newly-constructed international terminal at the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport in Abuja will be inaugurated by President Muhammadu Buhari on Thursday, an official says.
Mr Saleh Dunoma, the Managing Director of Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN), told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Monday in Abuja that all requirements to make the facility functional had been met.
Dunoma added that the terminal, which was being constructed by the China Civil Engineering and Construction Company (CCECC), would be ready to commence operation immediately after its inauguration on Thursday.
He assured that all issues that could stop airlines from commencing operation at the terminal had been addressed, adding that all international airlines had expressed their readiness to use the facility.
“Some foreign airlines would have loved to move in earlier than this, but we have to wait until the contractors finish the project.
“But the terminal building is ready for operation because everything that can make it work are already in place.
“There were some problems that were discovered by the engineers earlier, which are very minor, and we drew the attention of the contractor and they have rectified them.
“We are working towards Dec. 20 which was the date given by the Minister of Aviation.
“The foreign airlines are willing to start using this facility immediately and we are working with them.
“They have gone through the entire terminal and they have seen that the new terminal is a lot better than what we have before now in terms of equipment, installations, space facilitation and comfort.
“The only issue they raised is connectivity, which is normal, and a team of engineers are working on this to help them connect with their foreign offices so that they can easily communicate passenger information and data,’’ the FAAN managing director said.
Dunoma said government was determined to expand the airport facilities to enhance maximum utilisation of the new terminal, saying the apron would be expanded to accommodate more aircraft.
“We are also going to build new fire station and that will also improve fire rescue operations in the airport.
“But the existing fire station and control tower are sufficient enough to service this new terminal when in operation.
“We are also planning for something like the additional runway and pavement to increase the capacity of landing and parking,’’ he said.
NAN reports that the terminal at Abuja airport is one of the four new ones being constructed at the cost of $600 million by the CCECC under the Export-Import Bank of China loan.
The others are in Lagos, Port Harcourt and Kano and are being financed from the $500 million loan from China-Exim Bank and $100 million counterpart funding from the Federal Government.
President Muhammadu Buhari had in October inaugurated the new terminal in Port Harcourt, while the remaining two are expected to be ready for use in 2019.
Cristiano Ronaldo has urged long-time rival Lionel Messi to be more like him and push his limits by challenging himself in another league than Spain.
“I’d like him to come to Italy one day. I hope he accepts the challenge like me, but if he’s happy there then I respect that,” Ronaldo told the Italian press on Monday.
The two strikers have been rivals for the past decade winning five Ballon d’Or trophies each before their domination was broken by World Cup runner-up Luka Modric last week.
Asked if he missed the 31-year-old Argentinian, who has spent his entire senior career at Barcelona, Ronaldo replied: “No, maybe it’s him who misses me …
“I’ve played in England, Spain, Italy, Portugal and for my national team, while he’s still in Spain.
“Maybe he needs me more… For me, life is a challenge, I like it and I like to make people happy.
“He’s a fantastic player and a good guy, but I don’t miss anything here. This is my new life and I’m happy.
“I left my comfort zone and took on this challenge here in Turin, everything has gone well, I’ve proven I’m still an incredible player,” said Ronaldo.
Ronaldo joined Juventus for 100 million euros ($114 million) last summer as the Turin giants bid to lift the Champions League trophy after two runners-up finishes in the past four seasons.
To mark his 150 days in Italy he gave interviews on Monday to three leading sports dailies: La Gazzetta dello Sport, Corriere dello Sport and Tuttosport.
“I had different options. I won’t say which but I had them. Juventus is a solid club. It has a long history,” he said of his decision.
“I knew the atmosphere in the stadium. I’d played several times in Italy. I like the city, the people and the club. I knew it could work.
“I couldn’t be 100 percent sure I was joining the best club in the world. After nine years at Real Madrid it was difficult to compare.
“Now I’m 100 percent sure it was the right option.”
– ‘Not an obsession’ –
Ronaldo has scored 11 goals this season, bringing his career total to 584.
Finishing second in Ballon d’Or voting to Modric, said Ronaldo, just motivates him even more.
“Of course I’m disappointed, but life goes on and I will continue to work hard,” said the 33-year-old.
“On the pitch I’ve done everything to win the Ballon d’Or, numbers do not lie, but I’m no less happy if I do not win, I have wonderful friends and a family, I play in one of the best clubs.
“Congratulations to Modric, who has earned the award, but next year we will meet again and I will do everything to win the prize again.
“Do you think I’m going home and crying?”
Juventus play Young Boys in their final Champions League group game in Switzerland on Wednesday, having already booked their place in the knockout rounds.
And Ronaldo is hoping his experience of winning the trophy five times can serve his new team.
“The Champions League cannot be an obsession, you have to think about it calmly,” he warned.
“Yes we all want it but we have to get there step by step.
“Look at the game against Manchester United (2-1 defeat), if it had been a quarter-final we would have gone out. You need a little luck.”

The England international joins Harry Kane and Mauricio Pochettino in committing his long-term future to the north London outfit
Dele Alli has signed a new six-year deal with Tottenham that will keep him at the club until 2024.
The England international joined Spurs from MK Dons in 2015 and has gone onto become one of the best young players in Europe under the tutelage of Mauricio Pochettino.
In 153 games for the north London outfit he has scored 48 goals and laid on 41 assists, forming a formidable attacking partnership with Harry Kane.
He joins Kane in committing his long-term future to Tottenham, with the England captain having signed a new deal in June that will also keep him with the club until 2024.
With Pochettino having also agreed a five-year deal of his own, the Premier League giants have moved quickly to tie down their biggest assets ahead of their move to the new White Hart Lane in 2019.
“Delighted to have signed a new contract until 2024,” Alli posted on Instagram.
“Would like to say a big thank you to everyone at the club – chairman, manager, all my team-mates and the fans for their constant support.
“I’ve loved my time at Spurs so far and I’m very excited to see what the future holds!”
Tottenham’s transition from mid-table underachievers to Champions League regulars under Pochettino has been aided by Alli’s rapid development over his three years at the club.
The 22-year-old won the PFA Young Player of the Year award in each of his first two seasons at the club, with his form earning him a spot in the PFA Premier League Team of the Year for both 2016 and 2017.
Such displays saw him earn his first England cap in 2015, with Alli having gone onto represent his country on 31 occasions thus far, including at both Euro 2016 and the 2018 World Cup.
He remains a key part of Gareth Southgate’s plans, though he missed the recent Nations League matches against Croatia and Spain due to a hamstring injury.
Alli made his return to action following that injury on Monday as he came off the bench in Tottenham’s 1-0 defeat to Manchester City at Wembley.
And he is likely to get more minutes under his belt in the coming days as Pochettino’s side face West Ham in the Carabao Cup on Wednesday before taking on Wolves in the Premier League on Saturday.

An aide to party chairman Adams Oshiomhole, Simon Ebegbulem, also confirmed the appointment but said Mr Issa-Onilu would have to be inaugurated before he can assume duties.
Mr Issa-Onilu takes over from the acting spokesperson, Yekeen Nabena, who has now reverted to his position as deputy national publicity secretary of the party.
Mr Nabena took the spokesperson’s position in interim capacity following the resignation of Bolaji Abdullahi who defected to the opposition Peoples Democratic Party.
When contacted for details of the new appointment on Friday, Mr Nabena said he was in Lagos and was not at the NWC meeting. He said he was yet to be briefed on the outcome but would release an official statement as soon as he is briefed.
The new publicity secretary, Mr Issa-Onilu, is a specialist in strategic public communications planning, with vast experience in corporate and political communications, crisis communication, policy analysis and development issues.

He is also an associate member of the Advertising Practitioners Council of Nigeria (APCON).
He worked variously as a media relations executive and journalist for 15 years and as a policy and development issues strategist, public perception analyst and communication planner in the last 13 years.
Mr Issa-Onilu joined the defunct Comet Newspapers in Lagos as a News Editor and later moved to Thisday Newspapers as Assistant Editor, SundayThisday.
He resigned as Group Politics Editor, Thisday Newspapers.
He also worked for the World Investment News (Winne), France, for the production of a special report on Nigeria’s democratisation process, published in the June 1999 edition of FORBES International Business magazine.
The new ruling party spokesperson has written many papers and delivered lectures on public communication, crisis communication and reputation management and Integrated Marketing Communications.
He delivered a paper on ‘How to Prepare a Marketing Plan’ at a workshop for advertising and marketing chief executives and practitioners organised by the Advertising Practitioners Council of Nigeria (APCON) in Abuja in 2008 and in Kaduna in 2009. He also delivered a paper on ‘How to Develop Effective Public Communications Campaign’ to advertising, public relations, marketing and media practitioners in Abuja and the North on the invitation of APCON in 2015.
He also delivered a paper on ‘Crisis Communication and Reputation Management’ before an international audience of communication, marketing, advertising, and public relations academia, practitioners and faculty at the Baruch College, State University of New York, New York, USA in June 2010.
Mr Issa-Onilu, like his substantive predecessor, Mr Abdullahi, is from Ilorin in Kwara State. He was among the three other candidates who lost to Mr Abdullahi in the original election for the position of national publicity secretary of the ruling party.
