Ibrahim Taiwo, Officer Representing Army At Lagos Judicial Panel, Promoted To Major-General

Ibrahim Taiwo, the officer representing the Nigerian army at the panel the Lagos state government set up to probe the Lekki shooting has been promoted from brigadier-general to a major-general. Soldiers had, on October 20, forcefully dispersed #EndSARS protesters at the Lekki toll gate and this led to an outcry. Following the protest to end police brutality, the Lagos government set up the panel to look into allegations of rights abuses by the police special anti-robbery squad (SARS). But the shooting of protesters at Lekki has been on the forefront at the panel, and Taiwo, commander of the army 81 division intelligence brigade, has been the one making a defence for the soldiers’ action. According to military sources, Taiwo was elevated to the rank of a major-general after ...

Lekki Shooting: We Wouldn’t Do Anything Differently – Brigadier-General Taiwo

The Nigerian Army has said with the benefit of hindsight, it would not have taken a different action if presented again with a scenario similar to the October 20 shooting incident at the Lekki Tollgate. The Nigerian Army made the assertion on Saturday at the Lagos State Judicial Panel of Inquiry for Restitution for Victims of SARS Related Abuses and Other Matters. Representing the Army was Brig.-Gen. Ahmed Taiwo, Commander of the 81 Division, Military Intelligence Brigade, Victoria Island. He made the assertion while being cross-examined by the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA). “Given the same set of circumstances, the military would have acted in the same way. After every operation, we usually do an After Action Review and come up with lessons learnt. “I have looked at the tollgat...

From Denial To Blame Game — Army And Lagos State Government Spat On Lekki Shooting

“FAKE NEWS” – That was the Nigerian Army’s first response to reports that its personnel opened fire at the #EndSARS protest ground in Lekki, Lagos state. The army shared a picture of a post claiming that soldiers were directed “to shoot at peaceful, unarmed #EndSARS protesters” at the tollgate, stamping it with “FAKE NEWS”, its usual signature to debunk whatever it considers unfavourable. But with time, it became clear that the army might have a different definition of “fake news” from the common reference to misinformation and disinformation. Between the time it shared the first post and Saturday, when it appeared before the Lagos panel of enquiry, the army has debunked 18 social media posts relating to the incident – but it has also gone ahead to admit most of them. Likew...

Hoodlums Wearing Army Uniform Behind Lekki Shooting – Malami

Abubakar Malami, attorney-general of the federation (AGF), says it is likely that hoodlums wearing military fatigues — and not soldiers — shot #EndSARS protesters at the Lekki tollgate in Lagos state. About two weeks ago, protests calling for the disbandment of the special anti-robbery squad (SARS) took flight across the country. The police unit was disbanded but the protests persisted as citizens demanded reforms in the force. Protesters converged on the tollgate for 13 days before they were forcefully dispersed by soldiers. There are reports that some of the protesters were killed by the soldiers who stormed the tollgate on October 20, 2020, but there are disparities in the number of casualties and no clear evidence has been produced. Speaking with journalists on Monda...

Tinubu’s Full Statement On Lekki Shooting

THE #ENDSARS PROTESTS; A FUNDAMENTAL LESSON IN DEMOCRATIC GOVERNANCE I heavily grieve for those who have lost their lives or been injured during the period of these protests. 2. My deepest sympathies go to their families and loved ones for none should have been made to pay such a dear price. My career as an active politician spans nearly three decades. 3. In that time, I have seen many things as Nigeria has struggled, sometimes against itself, to undertake the often painful yet inexorable push toward democratic government accountable to, and protective of, the people. 4. Here, let me directly address the sharp point aimed against me. I have been falsely accused of ordering the reported deployment of soldiers against peaceful protesters that took place at Lekki on 20 October...
