Italian Police Arrest 16 People During Raid On Nigerian Drug Ring

On Tuesday, Italian police arrested 16 people as they smashed a Nigerian mafia drugs ring in the northern city of Trento, ANSA News Agency of Italy reported on Tuesday. The report also said police carried out 20 raids in the regions of Trentino, Veneto and Lombardy in the operation, codenamed 'Underground'. Police said the gang-controlled the drugs trade in Trento. However, it was based in the back of a Nigerian ethnic goods store in the Veneto city of Verona, police said – while the drugs were stored in another Veneto city, Vicenza. The police said those arrested allegedly 'commuted' to and from Trento and Verona on the train. The Perugia Prosecutor's Office has confirmed the Serie A giants were 'activated to accelerate the recognition of Italian citizenship' for the forward Juventus have claimed their innocence after it was confirmed the club's management is under further investigation by Italian police over the collapsed transfer of Luis Suarez from Barcelona. The Serie A giants looked well-placed to sign the forward over the summer but the deal fell through. Juve had already filled their quota of non-EU players in their squad so Suarez took a ‘B1’ citizenship test. Suarez’s wife, Sofia Balbi, has an Italian passport so passing the test would mean he did not take up a non-EU place in their squad, but in September it was alleged that it had been fixed.

More than 200 police took part in a major operation against the Nigerian mafia in Italy on Wednesday led by the flying squads of Turin and Ferrara. Police made dozens of arrests against the Nigerian mafia organization called Arobaga Vikings or Norsemen Kclub International, organized into local cells called Decks and present in many Italian cities. National leaders of the mafia, which deals mainly in prostitution and drug trafficking were arrested. They included 50-year-old Emmanuel Okenwa aka 'Boogye', an AfroBeat DJ and the self-styled "King of Ferrara". In all, 31 people were arrested in Ferrara. Two Nigerian mafia clans operating in Italy and abroad to traffic and sell Nigerian women into sex slavery and prostitution have been busted by Italian police. In a massive operation on Tuesday, some 32 people were arrested in Puglia, Sicily, Campania, Calabria, Lazio, Abruzzo, Marche, Emilia Romagna, Veneto and, abroad, in Germany, France, Netherlands and Malta. In a sting dubbed "operation chains", police slapped Andrea Caroti, in cuffs and accused him of illegally hiring a Senegalese worker and ruthlessly pushing him into the sea off Tuscany in June last year. "The man, saved by a lifeguard who spotted him thrashing about in the water, told his rescuer that the captain had pushed him into the sea for fear of the coast guard, which was carrying out checks," a police statement said. One man has died in a series of strong earthquakes which have hit central Italy, a region devastated by deadly tremors last year. Four quakes of magnitude 5.2 and higher struck near the hill town of Amatrice, 100 km northeast of Rome, in the space of four hours. Much of the area had already been abandoned after last year's earthquakes. The central Lazio, Marche and Abruzzo regions have been grappling with heavy snow, and one man aged about 82 died after the snow and one of the tremors made the roof of a farm building fall on him, a fire service spokesman said. A hotel in Abruzzo was hit by an avalanche and local media reported three people were feared missing. On-The-Run Mafia Boss Captured In Italy

A Mafia boss has been arrested in Italy after being on the run since 2014. Italian police tweeted that Andrea Nizza, one of the 100 most wanted criminals in Italy, had been picked up in Sicily. Italian news agency ANSA said the 30-year-old had been in hiding since 2014. He was the head of an armed wing of the Mafia clan Santapaola and had been sentenced to several years in prison. Nizza is suspected of involvement in a major drug trafficking ring. ANSA said police had also arrested two of Nizza's friends, who had rented the house where he was hiding. Nizza's brother has been helping the police and could have led them to him, ANSA added.
