How Atiku Abubakar Will Lose February 16 Election

Get this straight: Atiku Abubakar will lose the presidential election on February 16. I’m not Rev. Father Ejike Mbaka or one of the tongue-in-cheek seers whose predictions you’ll be struggling to figure out after dropping your offering in the bag at midnight of December 31. I’ll say it the way it is, walking where angels fear to tread. You’re free to believe who you want or what you choose, but here’s why Atiku will lose. The two main candidates will split the north, the country’s largest vote bank, with 38.9million or over 50 percent of the 72.8million registered voters as at January. But President Muhammadu Buhari’s fanatical hold over the north west, which has over 18.5million registered voters – the highest in the country – will still give him an edge over Atiku. The deciding...

Sukkuk Bond: Promotion Of Religious Financial Policy Violates Constitution – CAN

The Christian Association of Nigeria has opposed the floating of the Sukkuk Islamic bond by the Federal Government, insisting that it is part of the ‘agenda’ to Islamise the country through the back door. It queried the introduction of Islamic financing into the country, saying it is in violation of Section 10 of the Constitution. The CAN, in a statement on Tuesday in Abuja by its General Secretary, Rev. Musa Asake, demanded the abrogation of the laws and framework behind the bond and threatened to seek legal redress if this is not done. The group said the FG was trying to sell the nation to Arab countries through the Sukkuk bond, arguing that the government is pursuing an ‘Islamisation agenda.’ According to the Christian body, Nigeria is a secular state and the government is e...

Kenyan Supreme Court Ruling And Democracy In Africa

As expected, the Supreme Court’s annulment of Kenya’s August 8 presidential election over “irregularities and illegalities” has provoked mixed reactions. However, all seem agreed that the justices of the apex court had demonstrated rare courage in upholding the will of the people over and above other considerations including the risks of ruling against a usually powerful sitting African president. At issue was the deployment of Information, Communication Technology (ICT) in the electoral process, particularly in the vote tallying and results transmission, but events that led up to Election Day, were ominous, especially the gruesome murder a week to the polls, of Chris Msando, the acting head of the ICT department of Kenya’s Independent Elections and Boundaries Commission (IEBC). The fac...

Politicians Of Fortune In Nigeria

Hate or like him, Mr. Nnamdi Kanu, the irrepressible leader of the self-determination body – Indigenous Peoples of Biafra (IPOB) – has some germane observations on the sickening nature of politics and the lack of good governance in Nigeria. In one of his comments, he was quoted as saying that the reason his group has embargoed their card carrying members from participating in the November 8th 2017 governorship poll in Anambra State is because those seeking political offices under the extant constitution of Nigeria are basically motivated by the pecuniary benefits they could garner for themselves from those public offices. Reading through a large volume of political history of Nigeria, a persistent theme present is the disturbing dimension that political corruption has stunted the pro...

The Akwa Ibom Government has declared a one-day fast on Sept. 1, as part of activities marking the 30th Anniversary of the creation of the state. Akwa Ibom was created on Sept. 23, 1987 alongside Katsina State by the erstwhile administration of Gen. Ibrahim Babangida. The state-wide fasting was announced on Friday in Uyo by the Commissioner for Information and Strategy, Mr Charles Udoh. A statement issued by the commissioner explained that as Akwa Ibom would be celebrating its 30 years of creation, it was needful to seek the face of God and pray for His blessings. Udoh said that the fasting would be led by the state governor, Mr Udom Emmanuel, and the theme would be “Shine, for thy light is come’’ drawn from the Bible (Isaiah 60:1). “This year’s anniversary is epochal, consi...

Gbajabiamila Was Convicted For Stealing $25,000 – Lere Olayinka

Media spokesperson of Governor Ayodele Fayose of Ekiti state, Lere Olayinka has called out the APC for being hypocritical and has accused Hon. Femi Gbajabiamila of allegedly being convicted for stealing $25,000 from a client when he was practising law in the United States. In a statement titled "Ibori's appointment into PDP Convention Committee and APC hypocrisy", Olayinka wrote; 1. The first National Chairman of the APC, Chief Bisi Akande was jailed in 1984 by a Tribunal duly set up by Buhari's military regime for using funds belonging to the old Oyo State to fund his political party. It is also a fact that it was late Chief Sunday Afolabi who prevailed on the Osun S...

Nasarawa Lawmaker Accuses Obasanjo, Others Of Searching For Buhari’s Successor

A lawmaker, Mr. Kassim Mohammed Kassim, has alleged that “a search for President Muhammadu Buhari’s successor” by three former leaders is a “conspiracy against good governance” which Buhari is entrenching through the fight against corruption. Speaking under the aegis of The Democratic Youth Congress, Kassim accused the past leaders, notably ex-presidents Olusegun Obasanjo, ex-military ‘president’ Ibrahim Babangida and ex-military Head of State Abdulsalami Abubakar, of not being comfortable with Buhari’s stance towards corruption. The national chairman of the group, Kassim, who is also a member of the Nasarawa State House of Assembly representing Akwanga South, made the assertion in an interview in Lafia on Monday. Kassim said: “I debunk media reports of purported hunt for the repl...

Southeast Group Slams IBB Over Calls For Nigeria’s Restructuring

The Eastern Consultative Assembly (ECA) has faulted former military president Ibrahim Babangida over his call for restructuring of Nigeria. In a statement in Enugu signed by its Secretary, Evang. Elliot Ugochukwu-Uko, the group said Babangida belonged to the club of the elite who bluntly refused to accept that the style, manner and format of the creation of the existing 36 states were a huge source of grief to millions of Nigerians and therefore, the real bone of contention. Gen Babangida (rtd) had on Monday said the time had come for Nigeria to be restructured. Babaginda, who urged leaders across the aggrieved parts of the country to show maturity, insisted that war is not a “joke anyone should toy with.” Reacting, however ECA noted that any restructuring that tended to mainta...

June 12: Afenifere Laments Anti-Igbo Threat, Insists On Restructuring

Pan-Yoruba socio-political group, Afenifere, has lamented that it is sad that Nigeria is now marking another June 12, 24 years after the annulment of the freest and fairest presidential poll won by late Chief MKO Abiola, amidst an October 1 quit order to Ndigbo by Arewa youths, who have also secured endorsement from the Northern Elders Forum (NEF) and Arewa Consultative Forum (ACF). This was just as the group declared that the country had fumbled and wobbled through 18 years of pretending that its unity was settled, restating the Yoruba nation’s belief that the only way that Nigeria would be able to fulfill its destiny as one country was for all Nigerian nationalities to run their lives according to their civilisations in a restructured polity that practices federalism in its truest for...

Why I Annulled June 12 Election – Babangida

Former military Head of State, General Ibrahim Babangida, has revealed reasons he annulled the June 12, 1993 Presidential election which Bashorun MKO Abiola, was adjudged the winner. Babangida said he was compelled to nullify the election because of security threats to the enthronement of a democratic government at that time. Babangida gave the reason yesterday on a TV programme, Moments with Mo, anchored by Mo Abudu and broadcast on MNet channel of DSTV. Babangida, who described the annulment as “unfortunate” revealed that he would launch a book on the saga next year. He also said that having been in government at the time, he and the Armed Forces Ruling Council, AFRC, knew that the new democratic government to be installed would sooner than later be toppled through another mi...
