Andrew Okeleke Loses Wife in BRT Bus Accident

The death has been announced of Mrs. Grace Okeleke, wife of the Head, Public Relations, Globacom, Mr. Andrew Okeleke. According to a statement issued by the family on Thursday, the late Mrs Okeleke died in a motor accident on Lagos road, Ikorodu, on Monday evening. She was hit by a Lagos BRT bus with registration number EPE 59 XR. The deceased was said to be crossing the road after being dropped off by her driver just after Agric Bus Stop, inward Ketu where there was no pedestrian bridge, when she was hit by the BRT bus. Airtel Overtakes Globacom To Become Nigeria’s Second Largest Network

Airtel Nigeria is now the second-largest telecommunications service provider in the country. According to the July subscriber data released by the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC), Airtel gained a total of 906,400 customers in July to become second. Airtel currently has 123,327 subscribers more than Globacom that has occupied the position for years. In total, there are now 174,668,626 active GSM lines in the country. In the month under review, MTN gained 1,379 new subscribers with another 118,442 subscribers from Visafone, a CDMA network it acquired. Telecommunications services have gone poorer in the last few days owing to a partial disconnection of telephone lines largely due to increasing and unpaid interconnect debts. It was learnt that an interconnect debt of over N165 billion among some stakeholders, including the Mobile Network Operators (MNOs), clearing houses and Value Added Service (VAS) providers, is currently causing silent but serious frictions in the telecoms sector. MTN Nigeria has received N2.6bn part-payment of interconnect debt from Globacom, sources familiar with the issue confirmed on Thursday. It was gathered that the industry regulator, Nigerian Communications Commission, had intervened in the debt issue, which led to partial disconnection of calls from Glo to MTN subscribers. The source also said discussions were ongoing to devise a means of recovering the rest of the interconnect debt from Globacom. Nigeria recorded a total of 140 million active voice subscriptions and 93.26 million active Internet subscriptions in the third quarter of 2017. The National Bureau of Statistics, NBS, said this in a report on “Telecoms Data: Active Voice and Internet per State, Porting and Tariff Information for the Third Quarter of 2017’’ posted on its website. Globacom has once again demonstrated its data pedigree in Nigeria by recording the largest percentage of data subscribers in relation to the total number of customers on any network in the country. This was revealed in the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) report covering the first three months of year 2017. Globacom, at the end of the first quarter, recorded a total of 27,021,200 data customers, representing 72 per cent of the total number of subscribers on its network which stood at 37,328,827. There was a total of 41,419 incoming porters in the first quarter of 2017 (across all three months). This compares with a total of 49,547 in the final quarter of 2016, and 51,301 in the first quarter of 2016, decreases of 16.40% and 19.26% respectively.   Abu Dhabi telecoms group, Etisalat, may sell its stake in Etisalat Nigeria, which has defaulted on a $1.2bn loan, but wants the company’s debt restructured before it does so, Reuters quoted two sources as informing it on Monday. The Central Bank of Nigeria and the Nigerian Communications Commission on Friday agreed with local banks to pursue a default deal rather than a receivership for Etisalat Nigeria so as not to deter investors and to avoid a wider debt crisis. Telecommunication provider Airtel topped the chat of new subscribers for the month of September with 400,847 new subscriptions. The number topped Globacom who recorded 215,700 new subscribers for the month under review. MTN was next with 60,558,569 and Etisalat recorded 64,870 new subscribers.
