The unrest in the southern college town presented Trump with a domestic crisis, with many on both left and right criticizing him for waiting too long to address it and then, when he did so, failing to explicitly condemn the white-supremacist marchers who ignited the melee. “Absolutely we are going to have further demonstrations in Charlottesville, because our constitutional rights are being denied,” said Jason Kessler, identified by civil rights groups as a white nationalist blogger. Putin Offers Asylum To Former FBI Director James Comey

Russian President Vladimir Putin offered asylum to the former director of the U.S. Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI), James Comey. Putin said that Comey’s release of records of his conversations with President Donald Trump equated to being an activist, like former U.S. intelligence contractor Edward Snowden, who lives in Russia under asylum. If Comey, who was fired by Trump, continues to be persecuted, “we will be ready to provide him political asylum,” Putin said on national television. On June 8, Comey accused President Donald Trump of firing him to try to undermine the FBI investigation into possible collusion between his 2016 presidential campaign team and Russia. Asked at a U.S. congressional hearing why he was fired, Comey said he did not know for sure. “Again, I t...

Washington On Edge Ahead Of Comey Testimony On Trump, Russia Probe

Fired FBI chief James Comey has confirmed that Donald Trump urged him to drop a probe into former national security advisor Michael Flynn, in a preview of hotly awaited testimony Thursday that could rock the foundations of the presidency. Comey’s bombshell claim Wednesday fueled fresh allegations that Trump illegally tried to obstruct an investigation into Russian interference in the 2016 election. In a written statement ahead of his testimony to the Senate Intelligence Committee, Comey detailed how Trump repeatedly raised the Russia case with him earlier this year, asking him to go easy on Flynn, who is accused of improper links to Moscow. Trump complained the investigation was a “cloud” over his administration that needed to be lifted, Comey said. And at a private White House...

US Holds Breath For High-Stakes Comey Hearing

The US capital will grind to a halt Thursday, glued to TV sets and computer screens as sacked FBI chief James Comey testifies about whether President Donald Trump asked him to drop a probe into one of his key aide’s links to Russia. Trump, a ratings-obsessed former reality TV star, may not appreciate the worldwide attention paid to Comey’s public testimony, being touted as the Super Bowl of high political drama. Comey is the star witness in the Senate Intelligence Committee’s investigations of alleged Russian election meddling last year, with the possible collusion of the Trump campaign. The allegations have drawn comparison to the 1970s Watergate scandal that brought down president Richard Nixon. Comey was given the go-ahead to deliver potentially explosive testimony after the Wh...
