Ten Held In Custody Over Senegal Stadium Disaster

Ten members of a Senegalese football club arrested over a stampede last month which killed eight supporters attending a cup final have been taken into custody, officials said on Saturday. Those arrested earlier in the week on suspicion of murder and premeditated assault include the chairperson of the US Ouakam supporters’ club and one of the team’s players. US Ouakam’s legal advisor Samba Diop told AFP the 10 people were taken into custody on Friday evening. Last week the Senegalese league declared the Dakar-based outfit “wholly responsible” for the tragedy which occurred after Ouakam fans threw stones and other objects at rival Stade de Mbour supporters during the League Cup final on July 15. A wall collapsed onto fans fleeing the stadium to escape the hail of projectiles, wit...

Four Killed, Six Missing In India Monsoon Floods

Heavy monsoon flooding has killed four people in western India, officials said Sunday, with grave fears held for at least six others still missing following torrential downpours. Major rail networks and dozens of highways in Gujarat state have been interrupted by floodwaters, and power to more than 120 villages cut in badly-hit areas. “Four people died after being swept away in rain waters since Saturday morning. Six others are missing”, Pankaj Kumar, a senior state government official, told AFP, adding the National Disaster Response Force was searching for survivors. The force, plus India’s military, had rescued more than 2,000 people from the worst-hit regions and relocated them to higher ground. The Indian Meteorological Department predicts heavy rain to batter the state for...

Verdict To Be Announced Over 96 Killed In 1989 Liverpool Stadium Disaster

Familes of victims killed in one of football's worst stadium disasters will learn on Wednesday whether those responsible for the tragedy will be brought to justice. Ninety-six fans of Liverpool Football Club were crushed to death after an access gate was opened at the Hillsborough stadium in Sheffield in 1989. The original inquest verdict of "accidental death" was revised to "unlawful killing" last year, after new evidence of police mistakes and a subsequent cover-up were revealed. Al Jazeera's Paul Brennan reports.

ILO Adopts New Standard On Response To Conflicts, Disaster Management

The International Labour Organisation (ILO) has adopted new landmark standard to respond to contemporary crisis situations arising from conflicts and disasters across the world. The ILO Director-General, Guy Ryder, stated this in his remarks at the closing ceremony of the 106th International Labour Organisation Conference (ILC) in Geneva, Switzerland. Ryder, in a statement on Sunday, said the conference had adopted a new landmark standard; “the Employment and Decent Work for Peace and Resilience Recommendations, 2017 (No.25)”. He said this updates an earlier ILO Recommendation adopted in 1944 that provide responses to contemporary crisis situations arising from conflicts and disasters. London Protesters Demand Just Over Grenfell Tower Disaster

Frustrations over the fatal Grenfell Tower fire boiled over today as residents demanding answers over the blaze stormed Kensington town hall. Hundreds of people gathered outside the Royal Borough of Kensington and Chelsea headquarters in west London wanting to know how the tragedy could have happened. Councillors are among those who face serious questions over the apparent safety failings which led to the fire spreading quickly up the tower block on Tuesday night. The protesters initially gathered outside the building, insisting that those displaced by the disaster be housed with the London borough rather than elsewhere. But some of the group then went through the door chanting 'we want justice' and pushed up the stairs towards the authority's offices.  Some shouted 'murderers' whi...

Death Toll In Ethiopia Landfill Collapse Rises To 113

The death toll from a collapse at a landfill outside Ethiopia's capital has risen sharply to 113, an Addis Ababa city official said. Dagmawit Moges confirmed the new toll on Wednesday evening, while an official with the city's emergency department, Nigatu Mamo, said the search and rescue effort continued. "We will continue the effort until we are directed to stop it. Our rescuers are working in two shifts, day and night," the emergency official said. Saturday's collapse of a mountain of garbage buried makeshift mud-and-stick homes inside the Koshe landfill on the outskirts of the capital. Excavators and rescuers have been pulling bodies from the black mud since then. One person was pulled out alive on Monday, two days after the disaster. Excavators were being redeployed from various...

More Rain As Thai Flood Death Toll Hits 40

Thailand faces more hardship from unseasonable floods that have killed 40 people in its south, with more rain expected in the major rubber-producing and tourist region in coming days, a top disaster agency official says. Persistent heavy rain well into what should be the dry season has triggered floods across the south, cutting road and rail links, threatening crops and affecting about 1.6 million people, head of the Disaster Prevention and Mitigation Department Chatchai Promlert said. "The worst isn't over. We're expecting more rain this week while clean-up efforts are underway in places where the waters have subsided," Chatchai told Reuters. The Meteorological Department says on its website more rain is expected on Monday. Flooding occurs in Thailand regularly during th...
