The Senate had on March 23, 2017, dropped two of the 47 ambassadorial nominees sent to it by the President for legislative confirmation. Nsofor from Imo State and 59-year-old Mr. Jacob Daodu from Ondo State were rejected based on the recommendation of the Senate Committee on Foreign Affairs. President of the Senate, Senator Bukola Saraki, however, read a letter from President Buhari at the plenary on Wednesday, in which he renominated Nsofor and replaced the Ondo nominee with Joseph Olusola Iji. The President also replaced Mr. Suleiman Zana Hassan from Gombe State who was nominated as minister after his ambassadorial nomination ...

Lekan Adetayo: Punch Reporter Who Was Expelled From Aso Rock Speaks

Abuja, on Monday morning, I received a message that the Chief Security Officer to the President, Bashir Abubakar, would like to see me in his office. What came to my mind immediately was that it was the Presidency’s Media Office that interfaces with journalists and not the CSO. I felt I should inform the presidential spokesmen before honouring the strange invitation. I proceeded to the office of the Special Adviser to the President on Media and Publicity, Mr. Femi Adesina, and informed him of the invitation. Adesina advised that I honoured it and updated him of developments. The Senior Special Assistant to the President on Media and Publicity, Mallam Garba Shehu, was not in the office at the time but I contacted him on the telephone. On getting to the CSO’s office, he was initially p...

Buhari’s CSO Expels Punch Reporter From Aso Villa Over Ill-Health Story

The Chief Security Officer to President Muhammadu Buhari, Bashir Abubakar, on Monday expelled PUNCH’s State House Correspondent, Olalekan Adetayo, from the Presidential Villa, Abuja. Abubakar had earlier summoned Adetayo to his office and questioned him on two reports he considered uncomplimentary of Buhari and his administration. He referred to the lead story of SUNDAY PUNCH of April 23, 2017 titled “Fresh anxiety in Aso Rock over Buhari’s poor health” and queried the motive behind it. He also referred to our corespondent’s column, Aso Rock Lens, published on Saturday, April 22, 2017 and titled “Seat of power’s event centres going into extinction.” Abubakar asked one of his men to go and take our correspondent’s statement and revert to him. He thereafter directed the Of...

Buhari’s Aides Tense Over Babachir, Oke Suspension

President Muhammadu Buhari’s bombshell of Wednesday, April 19, which stripped the erstwhile Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF), Babachir David Lawal, and the Director-General of the National Security Agency (NIA) Ayo Oke of their titles, has at the same time unleashed a floodgate of intrigues as to how the president will handle other crucial people in his administration. Many Nigerians applauded President Muhammadu Buhari for suspending Babachir Lawal to facilitate unfettered investigations into alleged infractions. His fate had been unclear since October 2016, shortly after the Senate constituted an ad hoc committee to investigate utilization of funds released to the Presidential Initiative on the North-East (PINE). Analysts over the past several months have placed Pr...

Fayose Condemns Continued Detention Of Suswan, Babangida Aliyu, Austin Okai, Oth

Ekiti State Governor, Mr Ayodele Fayose has decried the indiscriminate arrest and continued detention of former Governors of Benue and Niger States, Mr Gabriel Suswan and Dr Babangida Aliyu as well the National coordinator of Peoples Democratic Party National Youth Frontier (PDPNYF), Comrade Austin Usman Okai, describing their continued detention as further demonstration of the All Progressives Congress (APC) government regime of vindictiveness and disrespect for the laws of Nigeria. We Can Re-present Magu For Confirmation – Osinbajo

VICE-PRESIDENT Yemi Osinbajo has declared that there is no law in the Nigeria Constitution stopping the Presidency from representing the Acting Chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, Ibrahim Magu, as substantive chairman. Osinbajo, a Professor of Law and Senior Advocate of Nigeria, made this known while speaking with journalists at the Presidential Villa. He added that the Presidency is fully in support of Magu emerging as the substantive chairman of the EFCC. He said: “It is up to the Senate to make their judgement and it is up to us say what we want to do. “If our candidate is rejected, we can re-present him. “No law says we can’t re-present him. “And again, there is the other argument, whether or not we need to present him for confirmation and that’...

DSS Chief Trying To Cover Saraki Loot

Revealed: Why DSS Tries Hard To Exonerate Saraki Over N310M Robbed By His Security Aides In a development that points to the ways in which high-level personal relationships are undermining Nigeria’s anti-corruption agenda, the Department of State Services (DSS) has again rushed to the media, using unnamed officers, to deny that Senate President Bukola Saraki was the owner of N310 million stolen by the senator’s security aides from an operator of a bureau de change who was moving the cash. Mr. Saraki has close personal friendships with Director General of the DSS, Lawal Musa Daura, as well as other politically influential people, including a former military head of state. FG Should Drop Saraki’s CCT Case, APC Senators Tell Party

The All Progressives Congress caucus at the Senate on Tuesday expressed its grievances against the executive at a meeting with the party’s National Working Committee. It was gathered that at the closed-door meeting, which started at 2.45pm and ended at 5.25pm, the APC senators absolved themselves of blame over the non-confirmation of the Acting Chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, Mr. Ibrahim Magu. It was learnt that the senators told the party leaders that Magu’s confirmation “died” before getting to the Senate and that the senators only did its funeral. Investigations also showed that senators, who were loyal to the Senate President, Dr. Bukola Saraki, demanded the withdrawal of the suit against him at the Code of Conduct Tribunal, describing the trial as po...

No Going Back On Magu’s Rejection – Senators

The Senate will not rescind its decision to reject the appointment of the Acting Chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), Mr. Ibrahim Magu, to substantive capacity, New Telegraph investigations have revealed. This is, however, notwithstanding its official statement to welcome President Muhammadu Buhari’s peace initiative on the deteriorating Executive/ Legislative face-off. Most of the senators, who spoke to our correspondent on the condition of anonymity, for obvious implications, said that the move by the President to broker peace and end the current executive-legislative acrimony was welcome. Ironically, they reasoned that though such move was a responsible initiative, the upper chamber would, by no means, be persuaded by anybody to reverse its position on Mag...

Magu Under Fresh Probe Over 2 Abuja Mansions

This is certainly not the best of times for the embattled Acting Chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC as powerful forces, within and outside of government, not disposed to his continued stay in office have intensified efforts to break down his defence lines. One of such moves, Saturday Sun learnt, is an ongoing discreet investigation into the true ownership of two mansions on different streets in high brow Maitama area of Abuja. The buildings are allegedly linked to his wife. A highly placed source told Saturday Sun that the houses being investigated are located in Danube Street, Maitama and Missouri Street, off Colorado Close, Ministers Hill, also in Maitama. The two properties were said to have been bought last year. Saturday Sun could not confirm the vera...
