Buhari’s Government Gives Loans To 23,400 Beneficiaries

The Buhari Presidency’s Social Investment Programmes (SIPs) has been extended to artisans, with government disbursing 23,400 loans to beneficiaries in 13 states and the Federal Capital Territory of Abuja. The micro-credit scheme styled Government Enterprise and Empowerment Programme (GEEP), targets coverage for one million people, who are either artisans or market men and women, entrepreneurs or farmers. "They have already enrolled for the scheme and are expected to benefit this year", according to Laolu Akande, the senior special assistant on media to the presidency. The loan scheme is executed through the Bank of Industry, BOI, with the involvement of cooperatives. Total Nigeria Shut Down For Sacking Nigerian Workers

The Nigeria Union of Petroleum and Natural Gas workers, NUPENG, has shut down loading activities at all Total Nig. Ltd., depots nationwide over termination of workers appointment. According to a statement by Tokunbo Korodo, the South-West Chairman of the union, Total has been resisting the unionisation of workers under its contract programme in Lagos, Kaduna and Koko in Delta blending plants. “In view of this, the union has directed all workers in Total downstream to stop work until the management allows workers to unionise and slave labour introduced are cancelled. “This action should commence immediately,” he said.

Nigerian Government Starts Paying N5,000 Every Month To Poorest Citizens

The Federal Government has commenced the payment of N5,000 monthly to one million vulnerable Nigerians. In a statement released, Monday, by Laolu Akande, Senior Special Assistant on Media and Publicity to Vice president Yemi Osinbajo, the government stated that the payment was effected through the Conditional Cash Transfer, CCT, of the government’s Social Investment Programmes, SIP. According to the statement, one million Nigerians would receive N5,000 monthly payments under the CCT as a form of social safety net for the poorest and most vulnerable as budgeted for in the 2016 Budget. The Senate, on Tuesday, confirmed the nomination of 47 career ambassadors forwarded to it by President Muhammadu Buhari in July. The Senate, however, rejected the entire list of 46 non-career ambassador-nominees forwarded to it for confirmation in October. The rejection of the 46 non-career nominees was based on a report submitted by the Chairman, Senate Committee on Foreign Affairs, Monsurat Sunmonu (APC-Oyo). Sunmonu said the imbalance of nominations observed in the list of career nominees was not in corrected by the President in the non-career list. According to her, over 250 petitions were received by the committee from aggrieved Nigerians over the imbalance of nominations in the first list. Robbers attacked an Ughelli branch of Union Bank, and carted away N25 million after blowing up the bank’s vault with dynamite. It was gathered that the hoodlums, who were dressed in army camouflage, used dynamite and welding tools to break into the ATM inside the bank and the bank’s vault, where a bulk of the cash was kept.
