Liverpool forward Diogo Jota returns to training after knee injury

Liverpool forward Diogo Jota resumed full training on Wednesday after being out for more than two months with a knee injury, the Premier League club said. Jota scored nine goals in 17 games since arriving from Wolverhampton Wanderers in September. He sustained the injury in a Champions League match against Midtjylland on December 9. The club also said centre back Virgil van Dijk, who has been out since October following knee surgery, continued his rehabilitation with an individual outdoor session on Wednesday. Liverpool, who have dropped to sixth on the back of four straight league defeats, travel to bottom club Sheffield United on Sunday.

Meet Stephanie Frappart, The First Woman To Officiate Men’s Champions League Match

French referee Stephanie Frappart will become the first woman to take charge of a men's Champions League game when Juventus host Dynamo Kyiv on Wednesday. Frappart became the first woman to take charge of a major men's Uefa competition match when Liverpool and Chelsea met in the 2019 Super Cup. The 36-year-old also refereed the 2019 Women's World Cup final between the USA and the Netherlands. She has refereed French Ligue 1 games since 2019. Frappart oversaw her first Europa League game in October when Leicester City hosted Zorya Luhansk. Switzerland's Nicole Petignat was the first woman to referee Uefa men's matches, when she took charge of Uefa Cup qualifying round games between 2004 and 2009.

Before the Champions League match between AEK Athens and Ajax, a fan threw a suspected petrol bomb into the away end. The match ended 2-0 in favour of Ajax but the main action was off the field. An AEK fan threw a petrol bomb to the away end of the stadium and it exploded into a flame ball. Riot police were brought in to try and calm the situation down, but to no avail. Pictures emerged on social media of fans with blood streaming down their faces being held back by police. Fans had already been segregated by blocks of empty seats, but that was not enough as clashes broke out between the travelling Dutch fans and the Greeks. No confirmation has been made as of yet regarding whether any fans were arrested.
