Biggie’s crown sells for $595,000 at hip-hop auction

A plastic crown worn by rapper Biggie during a photoshoot just days before his murder has sold at auction for $594,750 in New York. The crown headlined Sotheby's first-ever sale devoted to hip-hop that featured more than 120 lots including jewelry, art and other ephemera of the genre born in the Bronx. The crown was worn by The Notorious B.I.G. - famous for hits including Juicy, Big Poppa and Hypnotize - during his last recorded photoshoot in 1997, just three days before his shock murder in Los Angeles. The photographer Barron Claiborne, who took the now immortal image of the artist born Christopher Wallace, put the rap artifact up for sale. Ben Enwonwu’s Painting Sold For £1.1m After Google Search

A painting by the Nigerian artist responsible for the ‘African Mona Lisa’ sold at auction in London on Tuesday for £1.1m after the family who owned it googled the signature and realised its importance. ‘Christine,’ by 20th century master of African modernism Ben Enwonwu, had been in the sitter’s family home ever since it was painted in Lagos in 1971. “The family were unaware of the significance of the painting or the importance of the artist, until a chance googling of the signature led them to Sotheby’s free Online Estimate Platform,” said the London auction house. The painting fetched over seven times the pre-auction estimate, finally going under the hammer for £1.1m (1.3 million euros, $1.4m). The work precedes the artist’s 1974 painting of Ife royal princess Adetutu ‘Tutu’ Ademil...

Argentine Polo Turns To Genetics To Produce Champions

Are champions born, or raised? That’s the question scientists in Argentina are trying to answer as they look to pinpoint the genes that make local horses the best in the world for playing polo. In Argentina, polo is a big deal, and big business, and to that end, cloning has already been used to reproduce the finest existing mounts. But scientists want to go one step further and map the entire genome of the Argentine polo horse in order to create the perfect specimen. From December, a group of five universities will analyze 80,000 horses from the breed as part of a project that will try to identify the ideal genetic balance that makes up a polo horse. The Argentine horses used to play polo have been bred specifically over decades by crossing a Criollo line descended from the or...
