1.3m People Tested For HIV In 7 Months In Akwa Ibom

A total of 1,355,203 persons have been tested for HIV in Akwa Ibom between April and October this year. The Deputy Director Technical, Strengthening Integrated Delivery of HIV/AIDS Services (SIDHAS), Dr Pius Nwaokoro stated this on Thursday in Uyo during an interaction with some media representatives on HIV treatment surge. He said the state has achieved 90 percent HIV/AIDS viral suppression rate and successfully controlled the epidemic in seven local government areas including, Uyo, Mbo, Okobo, Eastern Obolo, and Ibeno. Nwaokoro who revealed that 65,185 people in the state are HIV positive noted that the result was based on 10 years of consistent testing and counselling carried out in 21 local government areas of the state.

The latest quarterly factsheet of the National Agency for the Control of AIDS (NACA) has revealed that two states – Akwa Ibom and Benue, have the highest number of people infected with HIV in the country. According to the report, 48 out of every 1,000 persons selected at random in the states are likely to test positive for HIV, which is way higher than the national average – 13 in every 1,000 persons. A 10-year-old old boy has been rescued in in Ikot Udota, Eket, Akwa Ibom State by the Child’s and Rehabilitation Network (CRARN) after he was allegedly brutalised and shackled by his father and stepmother. According to the head of the NGO, Sam Ikpe Utauma, the victim, Ekemini was constantly tortured, starved and subjected to various inhuman treatment by the father and his wife. Two Recovered COVID-19 Patients Discharged In Akwa-Ibom

The Akwa Ibom State Government on Saturday announced that two patients have been discharged in the state following treatment and recovery from Coronavirus. The State Incident Manager and Commissioner for Health, Dr Dominic Ukpong said they were discharged after testing negative to the virus. According to Ukpong, this brings to 16, the total number of those treated and discharged since the first set of COVID-19 cases were recorded in the state on April 1, 2020. Twenty-four girls who were trafficked from Akwa-Ibom State to Lagos, for prostitution, were rescued at Abbatoir, Agege area of the state, by the Police, Thursday. Arrested, were four men suspected to have brought them. The girls whose ages were between 13 and 22 years, lived in shanties, where their male customers patronized them. They revealed during interrogation that they collected N1,500 from their male customers but had to reduce the price because of the impact of the COVID-19. Police uncover baby factory, rescue 19 pregnant girls

Lagos State Police Command has rescued 19 pregnant girls, between the age of 15 and 28, from a ‘baby factory’ at Ayanwale area of Ikotun. Two female suspects – 40-year-old Happiness Ukwuoma and 54-year-old Sherifat Ipeya – involved in the scandal, were arrested. The pregnant women were brought from Rivers, Cross River, Akwa Ibom, Anambra, Abia and Imo states. The Command has launched a manhunt of the principal suspect, Madam Oluchi from Mbano, Imo State. The victims were mostly abducted for the purpose of getting them pregnant and selling the babies to potential buyers. They were tricked with employment as domestic staff in Lagos. However, they are often held hostage on getting to Lagos. The babies are sold for N300,000 and N500,000 depending on the gender.

Akwa Ibom, Rivers Top States With High Unemployment Rate In 2018 3rd Quarter – NBS

The National Bureau of Statistics (NBS) said Akwa Ibom State reported the highest unemployment rate of 37.7 per cent in third quarter 2018. NBS said this in its Labour Force Statistics – Volume 2: Unemployment and Underemployment by State for Third Quarter, 2018 posted on its website. The bureau said Rivers was the second highest reported unemployment rate with 36.4 per cent followed by Bayelsa with 32.6 per cent. Also, Abia recorded 31.6 per cent and Borno reported 31.4 per cent unemployment rate in the quarter under review. Imported Thugs Nabbed In Akwa Ibom Ahead Of Governorship Election

Some suspected thugs have been apprehended by police operatives earlier today in Akwa Ibom state. According to reports, the men were allegedly imported from Edo and Ekiti states, ahead of the governorship election on Saturday, March 9, 2019. It is alleged that the some of them were dropped at the All Progressives Congress (APC) office along Ikot Ekpene while some were arrested. When they were questioned, the men allegedly said they came to work for the APC governorship candidate for Akwa Ibom State, Mr. Nsima Ekere. They also disclosed that four buses filled with able-bodied men have already arrived the state capital, Uyo. The men were forced to lie down on the ground as they were taken into custody by the police for further investigation.

The Akwa Ibom State Command has rescued seven more kidnap victims in Ukanafun and Etim Ekpo Local Government Areas of the state. Recall that the Command  in conjunction with the Military and the Department of State Service (DSS), on Saturday, rescued an official of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) and eight other victims who were held captive by suspected kidnapping syndicates.
