Mourinho Speaks on Delle Alli’s Anger During Tottenham’s Defeat to RB Leipzig

Tottenham Hotspur manager, Jose Mourinho, has disclosed why midfielder, Dele Alli was angry after being substituted during their UEFA Champions League round of 16 first-leg 1-0 defeat against RB Leipzig on Wednesday night in London.

Tottenham was defeated in front of their home fans after Timo Werner scored the only goal of the encounter from the spot-kick in the second half to give the Bundesliga leaders an advantage ahead of the return leg in March.

Dele Alli was captured by camera throwing a water bottle to the ground before looking visibly upset on the bench when Erik Lamela replaced him in the 64th minute of the encounter at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.

But Mourinho said Alli was angry when he was substituted because of his performance and not with him.

“I think Delle Alli was angry with his performance after he was substituted and not with me,” Mourinho told BT Sport.

“I believe Alli understood why I substituted him and brought in Lamela.

“Our team performance improved after that.”

He added: “Lamela can’t play full 90 minutes, so just like how Delle Alli came on against Southampton in the last 20 minutes to change the game, the same tactics I applied tonight.”

UEFA Boss Ceferin Defends Decision To Allow Fans Into Super Cup

UEFA president Aleksander Ceferin has defended the decision to allow fans to attend Thursday’s Super Cup match between Bayern Munich and Sevilla in Budapest, despite concerns about the Hungarian capital being a coronavirus hotspot.

A limited crowd will be allowed into the 67,000-capacity Puskas Arena for the meeting of the Champions League winners and Europa League holders, although several hundred Bayern fans reportedly handed back their tickets because of safety fears.

“We will have 16,000 spectators in the stadium, not even 30 percent,” of capacity, Ceferin said at a press conference following a UEFA executive committee meeting in Budapest on Thursday.

“The measures are strict and there is not a question of health risks for the fans.

“The easiest thing for us would be not to do anything. Health is the number one priority but we want to bring hope.”

Ceferin pointed out the number of fans being allowed into games currently varies considerably from country to country around Europe, with some setting a fixed maximum number of spectators and others adjusting crowds as a percentage of capacity.

Other countries, such as England and Spain, have started the new season with games behind closed doors.

“Fans and players are the essential part of football. We will take care of health, we are working day and night on it, but from today on we will see what we decide,” added Ceferin, who insisted no decision had been taken in terms of fans attending games at next year’s European Championships.

Chelsea have confirmed the signing of goalkeeper Edouard Mendy from Rennes for £22m on a five-year deal.

The 28-year-old will compete with goalkeepers Kepa Arrizabalaga and Willy Caballero for a starting spot at Stamford Bridge this season.

Mendy said: “I am so excited to be joining Chelsea. It’s a dream for me to be a part of this exciting squad and to work with Frank Lampard and all of his coaching staff. I look forward to meeting my team-mates and can’t wait to get started.”

On signing the Senegalese, Chelsea director Marina Granovskaia said: “As soon as Petr Cech and our technical team identified Edouard as the most suitable goalkeeper to complement our existing group, there was only one player we wanted to bring in.

“Edouard arrives following a season of real success with Rennes, he is ambitious for more, and we welcome him to our club.”

Senegal shotstopper Mendy made 34 appearances for Rennes since joining the Ligue1 club from Reims in the summer of 2019.
