197 new cases of COVID-19 recorded in Nigeria

197 fresh cases of COVID-19 were recorded in Nigeria on Thursday, September 10.   According to the Nigeria Center for Disease Control NCDC, Plateau State which has now become the COVID-19 epicenter in Nigeria recorded 83 new cases, the highest for the day.   Lagos had 48 infections,  Kaduna – 17,  FCT – 16, Ogun – 11,  Katsina – 7,  Imo – 4, Edo – 3. Nasarawa- 3,  Rivers – 2, Bayelsa -1, Oyo – 1 and  Osun – 1.   Nigeria now has 55,829 confirmed cases of the disease with 43,810 discharged so far. 1,075 deaths have so far been recorded.

Plateau state government on Wednesday shut down a private hospital after 17 staff tested positive for COVID-19. The hospital which is known as Rayfield Medical center is located in Rayfield, Jos South Local Government Area of the state. Police arrest lecturer’s murder suspect

POLICE in Plateau State have confirmed the killing of Dr Nandi Drenkat, a lecturer with the University of Jos, by gunmen. Commissioner of police Edward Egbuka confirmed the incident at a news briefing on Sunday in Jos, the state capital. Gunmen stormed the residence of the deceased in the early hours of Saturday, shot him and kidnapped his six-year-old daughter. Egbuka said the police mobilised to the scene and engaged the criminals in a gun duel and arrested one of them. He also confirmed that the kidnapped daughter of the deceased was also rescued from the abductors. He said that the manhunt for other fleeing members of the gang continued, promising that the command would not rest on its oars until they are arrested.

Amadu Atajan, an 18-year-old secondary school-leaver has died after he was allegedly tortured by some soldiers attached to the Special Task Force, Sector 7, Sha District, in the Bokkos Local Government Area of Plateau State. Atajan, who died on Wednesday, reportedly died from internal injuries he sustained in the hands of the soldiers. According to reports, the victim was assaulted on the account of his friend who reported a case of a stolen phone to the men sometime last week. Senator Joshua Dariye (Plateau West) has been found guilty of diverting N1.162 billion state ecological funds while he was governor of Plateau state between 1999 and 2007, Premium Times reports. Dariye, who was first arraigned in 2007 on a 23-count charge for the offence was found guilty by a Federal Capital Territory High Court.
