Jegede Files Petition Against Akeredolu’s Victory At Election Tribunal

Candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in the October 10 governorship election in Ondo State, Eyitayo Jegede, has filed petition at the tribunal challenging the victory of Governor Oluwarotimi Akeredolu. Governor Akeredolu won in 15 out of the 18 local government areas to lead Jegede with a wide margin at the polls. Other defendants in the petition are; the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) the All Progressives Congress and the Deputy Govenor- elect, Lucky Aiyedatiwa. Among the grounds on which the election is being challenged include; that it was marred by irregularities and pockets of violence and intimidation.

Update: Over 5,000 card readers destroyed in fire incident at INEC office in Ondo

The Independent National Electoral Commission has revealed that over 5000 card reader machines were destroyed in the fire that razed down its office in Akure, Ondo state's capital on the evening of Thursday September 10.   Speaking to journalists at the scene of the incident, INEC Commissioner in charge of Information and Voters Education, Festus Okoye said the Information and Communication Technology section of the commission was affected by the fire.   According to Okoye, 1000 card readers delivered to INEC from Osun State were burnt in the fire while over 4000 card readers belonging to INEC in the state were also burnt.   Admitting that the incident was a setback, the INEC commissioner stated that it will not affect the governorship election.

The Deputy Speaker of Ondo State House of Assembly, Irioju Ogundeji and another member of the House, Adewale Williams have been suspended for kicking against the impeachment of governor of the state, Agboola Ajayi. The Deputy Governor had been served an impeachment notice by 14 members of the house on grounds of an alleged gross misconduct, financial recklessness and negligence of duty among others. However Ogundeji and Adewale Williams who were among the nine lawmakers that kicked against the impeachment processes against Mr Ajayi on Tuesday July 7, were suspended for alleged unruly behaviour. COVID-19: Gov Akeredolu Confirms Ondo Recorded 30 new Cases

Governor Oluwarotimi Akeredolu of Ondo State has disclosed that the state recorded 30 new positive cases of COVID-19 in one week. Akeredolu disclosed this on Monday in Akure during a press briefing on the deadly pandemic at the Government House. Ondo Records two Coronavirus Deaths

Ondo state has recorded two new deaths linked to Coronavirus complications. The state's Governor, Rotimi Akeredolu confirmed this in a tweet shared on Monday June 1.   Akeredolu said the two late Coronavirus patients are among the three new cases reported in the state. They died at the University of Medical Sciences Teaching Hospital (UNIMEDTH) in Ondo town, Ondo State.   This brings the total number of Coronavirus deaths recorded in the South-West state to 4. The tweet reads; Today, we recorded three new cases and an unprecedented number of deaths from #COVID19Nigeria in Ondo State. 5 Coronavirus patients have been discharged from the Infectious Disease Hospital in Ondo state after recovering from the disease. The state's Commissioner for Information and Orientation, Donald Ojogo confirmed this in a statement. He said this brings the total number of people successfully treated of Coronavirus in the state to 11.   The statement reads in part; “This is to announce that five patients of the dreaded corona virus have been treated and discharged. “Against this backdrop, only four active cases are currently being monitored in accordance with prescribed globally-accepted protocols at the Infectious Disease Hospital (IDH).”

Ondo State has recorded its first death from Coronavirus, MCI has learnt. The patient died in the early hours of Monday at the Infectious Disease Hospital on Igbatoro Road in Akure, the state capital. Dr Wahab Adegbenro, Commissioner for Health in the state, made the disclosure during a chat with SaharaReporters. He said, "The patient died today at the isolation centre. Governor Akeredolu debunks claims of NYSC member contracting Coronavirus in Ondo

Ondo state governor, Rotimi Akeredolu, has denied media reports that the state’s third Coronavirus patient was a member of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC).   Reports were rife online today that a medical doctor serving at the 32 Artillery Brigade, Owena Cantonment had tested positive for the virus after having contact with the index case.   Reacting via his Twitter handle, the state governor said the third case was a former NYSC member who served in the barracks and was retained after the service year. The explosion occurred on Akure-Owo Expressway, at Ilu Abo town in the Akure North Local Government Area of Ondo State in the early hour of Saturday, injuring several people and destroying no fewer than 70 buildings in the community. The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has fixed date for party primaries and nomination of candidates for the Edo and Ondo governorship elections slated for September 19 and October 10 respectively. The party primaries for Edo state will hold from 2nd to 27th June, while that of Ondo State will hold from 2nd to 25th July. INEC National Chairman, Mahmood Yakubu, who made the disclosure during the Commission’s meeting with Resident Electoral Commissioners, warned that the Commission will not shift the dates. A final year student of a private University located in Owo, Ondo State, Achievers University has been handed a 13-year jail term by a Federal High Court sitting in Akure. The student, Fisayo Adetoro, who was in the first class category, was also ordered to pay a fine of One Million Naira after he was found guilty of impersonation, forgery and money laundering.
