Ondo Election: PDP Rejects Ogunbodede, OAU VC, As Returning Officer

The Peoples Democratic Party has rejected the choice of the Vice-Chancellor of the Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile Ife, Prof Eyitope Ogunbodede, as the Chief Returning Officer for Saturday governorship election in Ondo State. The Chairman, National Campaign Council of the PDP, who is also the Oyo State Governor, Seyi Makinde, said this at a press briefing in Akure on Thursday. Makinde said Ogunbodede is from Owo Local Government Area like Governor Rotimi Akeredolu, who is the candidate of the All Progressives Congress. A yet-to-be-identified man on Tuesday evening broke two gates and forced his way into the compound where a house occupied by the Ooni of Ife, Oba Adeyeye Ogunwusi, was located in his Ile Oodua’s palace in Ile Ife. According to sources, several gunshots were heard around the palace and one man was said to have been arrested in connection with the incident. The Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile-Ife has on Saturday morning thrown into mourning following the demise of one of its lecturers, Mr. Nicholas Igbokwe. Igbokwe, of the Department of Physical and Health Education, was said to have died in his office. The management of Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile-Ife, has suspended Prof. Richard Akindele, whose telephone conversation in which he demanded for sex from a female student was recorded and released on social media. A member of the committee who pleaded anonymity confided this to  Punch. He said the committee recommended the suspension of the professor  in a report of the committee set up by the university to probe the matter and to authenticate the veracity of the telephone conversation, where the lecturer demanded to have sex with the student five times before he would upgrade her mark from 33 to a pass mark.

One Feared Dead As Explosion Destroys Storey Building In Ile-Ife

At least one person has been confirmed dead after an explosion destroyed a storey building along Moore road in Ile Ife, Osun state last night. Though the cause of the explosion is being investigated, some residents in the area alleged it is most likely from an improvised explosive device. An unidentified man, who was critically injured at the back of the building, was subsequently rushed to the Obafemi Awolowo Teaching Hospital Complex (OAUTHC), Ile-Ife, where he later died in the early hours of today Sunday April 8th. The explosion brought down the building and also damaged adjoining structures in the area.

This was disclosed by Adeyanju Olaoluwa, the Coordinator of the scholarship and the Southwest Educational Competition Save Education Project, when some of the beneficiaries visited the Ooni, on Wednesday, in Ile-Ife.
